Tip 1: Remove the protective or gift paper Usually, both flowers at home and when picking them by hand, are accompanied by protective or gift paper. It is necessary to remove it as soon as possible, since once we have these decorative elements or to safeguard their state in transport, they have already fulfilled their function. To preserve a bouquet of roses, it is better that the packaging disappear, since it can negatively influence the oxygenation of the plant and the arrival of light. Also, that the beauty of the flower does not need that complement to shine at its highest quality.

Tip 2: Hydration - Access to water is vital not only to preserve a rose but out of sheer necessity so that it can prolong its cycle. Therefore, the second step is to maintain a constant and careful hydration from the first moment, which implies changing the water every day. The liquid that remains in the vase, after a while, becomes a source of bacteria and, therefore, a risk for the flower. Another way for hydration, in addition to the stem, is through the petals. Depending on the state in which they are, it may be advisable to put them under the tap or spray water.

Tip 3: Cuts - To maintain a rose, another key is cutting the stem. Once cut, the natural process is to 'heal' that wound, which in the long run will prevent the absorption of water. Therefore, it is necessary to remove a small part, about two centimeters long, so that this pathway remains open. This implies that a recurring cut is necessary daily, diagonally. And not only the fact of cutting is important, but also how to do it. The ideal would be to do it with specific scissors -pruning-, but if you don't have them, you have to think of an alternative. It is best to choose to do it with a clean and disinfected knife. Household scissors could damage the stem and make this step less effective.

Tip 4: Preservatives - Aspirin, copper, soda, vinegar... The list of recommended home remedies when looking for how to preserve roses is almost endless and its effectiveness is not always the best. It must be taken into account that for a method to work and be replicable, the measurements and environmental conditions would have to be the same... And that, to be realistic, is very difficult to happen. Therefore, our best advice is to bet on specific and specialized preservatives, which detail the amount to be added in a controlled manner.

Tip 5: Location -  Once the roses are cut to keep them as long as possible, it is good that they have light, but that it is, far from it, it reaches them directly. After all, they are cut and the impact of lightning would end up exhausting the flowers. In the same way, it is necessary to avoid drafts and environments that are very dry. They also do not do well to be around fruits. If the cold is respectable they can be outside during the night.

Tip 6: Cleaning - In addition to changing the water daily to maintain a bouquet of roses, it is equally important to clean the vase. After all, the water –and possible bacteria- have been in contact with the surface of the container. Added to this is the need to remove withered petals that have fallen or those that are in the process of being affected. Preferably the ones in the inner parts.
